ZENJI ISHII’S MINI COLUMN
“Scramble” is a side-scrolling shooter released by Konami in 1981. Due to its gameplay structure, it is often considered a precursor to the classic shooter “Gradius” (also by Konami).
Since the release of “Space Invaders” (Taito) in 1978, numerous similar fixed-screen shooters had been released in arcades. However, at the time, there were very few games with a scrolling screen (where the view moves from right to left).
Amidst this, “Scramble” was a highly refined game that incorporated most of the elements of horizontal scrolling shooters. Even today, it is hard to believe that this game was released over 30 years ago due to its high quality. The ability to switch between air shots and ground missiles, as well as the combat against terrain, are key aspects of the genre. The variety in gameplay, such as dealing with UFOs and meteor showers, gives the game a sense of dynamic pacing.
One cannot discuss horizontal shooters without playing “Scramble”, the origin of the genre. I encourage you to enjoy this game, which has been preserved in its original form, and experience it for yourself.
