ZENJI ISHII’S MINI COLUMN
“Gradius” is a side-scrolling shooter released by Konami in 1985. It sparked a craze right after its release and captivated many fans at the time. Its greatness has continued to be discussed and remembered to this day.
After playing it again after a long time, I was reminded of how it’s difficult but incredibly fun at the same time. The reason for this is likely that the game does not rely on the enemies’ durability for its difficulty level. The movement of the enemies feels purposeful, and even though their durability is low, they are still challenging. This depth is what makes the game so compelling.
The “Arcade Archives” version of “Gradius” is a complete edition that includes various versions of the game. I recall hearing that the chip configurations differ between versions, which affects the processing speed. The attention to detail in recreating the game, even down to the processing speed, is something that will delight game enthusiasts. From my experience playing it, the speed of the processing lag in each scene seemed to perfectly capture the feeling of playing it back in the day. I highly recommend experiencing this meticulous recreation firsthand.
